Behind the Series: How This Project Began
This project originated from an idea that came to me during a week-long silent meditation retreat in California. If I'm being honest, it struck me during a slightly distracted walking meditation. I froze in my tracks, as one often does when becoming aware of a distraction or thought during a walking meditation. The idea was simple but profound: I could create art while continuing my practice of silent walking meditation. I only needed to ponder it for a few minutes before it solidified in my mind. Then, I tucked it away and continued with my mantra and walk.
The concept is straightforward: I would select a simple mantra—one that I’ve used in previous walking meditations—and carve it into stamps. These stamps would be used to imprint the mantra repeatedly onto a canvas. After preparing the canvas, I would lay it down on a street and place paint at both ends. Then, using my tried-and-true walking meditation technique, I would walk back and forth across the canvas, repeating the mantra throughout the meditation.
The beauty of this project is its purity—each artwork will be available for sale as a Dana (a donation of any amount). This ensures that the art remains untainted by commercialism, allowing it to be a true expression of joy and mindfulness. Each piece will be named according to its location, date, and time of the walk, with any proceeds going directly back into creating more joy through art.
