Surface – A Dynamic Exploration of Form & Interaction
Surface blurs the line between painting and sculpture, transforming a traditionally static medium into an evolving, interactive work. Built through layers of sculpted texture, gold leaf, and 3D-printed elements, this piece invites engagement—not just through viewing, but through its ability to shift and change.
Using traditional sculpting tools, palette knives, and custom-modified trowels, I carved deep grooves into the surface, creating a rhythmic pattern that contrasts with the smooth, reflective gold leaf. Over the course of several weeks, layers of acrylic modeling paste were applied and shaped before being covered in over 350 sheets of gold leaf, resulting in a luminous yet imperfect surface—one that catches and reflects light in a dynamic way.
At its core, Surface is about adaptability and choice. Embedded within the work are strategically placed, magnetized sections where 3D-printed gold cubes can be moved, repositioned, and reconfigured by its owner. This modular design allows for subtle shifts in composition, reinforcing the idea that no artwork—or life—is ever truly fixed.
This piece will be exhibited at my solo show in London from March 17-20. Stay tuned for more details on the show and the evolving narrative of Surface.
